We are sorry to hear that your smoke detector is not working as expected. We understand that this can be alarming. We are happy to help you check what might be causing this.
Most smoke detectors use an optical sensor. Inside the detector there are two sensors that use a light beam to detect smoke. When this beam is interrupted, for example by smoke but sometimes also by dust or insects, the alarm may sound.
If the smoke detector gives an alarm without a clear reason, you can check the following:
1. Ventilate the room
Open windows and doors to remove any smoke, dust or vapors.
2. Check the detector for dirt
Remove the smoke detector from the ceiling and check if there is dust, insects or dirt inside the openings. You can carefully clean the detector with a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush.
This video shows how to do this:

3. Test the detector
Place the detector back and press the test button to check whether the alarm works correctly.
If the problem continues after these steps, it is advisable to replace the smoke detector.
